When my son began teething, I thought I knew what to expect and what to do. Like many new mothers, I’d assumed that resolving teething pain was as easy as tossing a teether his way and waiting for the good ol’ effects of gnawing on a frozen toy to take hold. The reality was something a little bit different as teething toys only did so much and they only worked for so long. Teething mittens had a similar effect; they might work for a while but nothing (and I mean nothing!) was working to truly handle my baby’s teething pain. And as a result, both myself and my son were cranky, tired, and definitely more irritable than usual.
That is when I got the idea to try out something I’d seen on Facebook and Instagram before but had dismissed: an amber teething necklace.
If you haven’t seen these around your social media feeds already (though most people probably have!): amber teething necklaces are necklaces made from amber beads which can help tackle infant teething pain right at the source. That is: the inflammation in the gums and mouth which cause irritation, discomfort and outright pain.
I’ve never tried anything quite like an amber teething necklace before. I didn’t know what to expect. When the necklace arrived, it came with instructions on use. All I had to do was let my baby wear the necklace against their skin and only let them wear it under supervision, of course, and never while sleeping and then wait for the necklace to begin working.
So, I put it on, double-checked the beads to make sure nothing was loose… and waited. Of course, the results weren’t immediate, this isn’t some magic flashing material that lets you know when it starts working but over the next few days I noticed a remarkable difference in how my baby was reacting to his teething pain. Or I should say how he wasn’t reacting to his teething pain! Within a few days, his teething pain had become so manageable that we was sleeping better and was in a visibly happy mood.
Amber teething necklaces aren’t miracles, but they are an incredible product that does something that no other teething remedy can do: tackles teething right at the source. It reduces and nearly eliminates inflammation, which is what causes teething pain in the first place. Rather than distract infants from their discomfort or numb the pain with coldness, amber teething necklaces eliminate the source of the pain before it can start to take root. The reason why amber teething necklaces work is through something called succinic acid, which is a natural anti-inflammatory that is found inside the amber itself. When the amber beads are worn against skin, it warms up the amber, which then secretes a trace amount of oil containing succinic acid.
I would highly recommend amber teething necklaces to all parents whether it’s your first baby or your third. It definitely helped me and my son get our lives back on track during the difficult and frustrating teething period.
Baby Teething Necklace Safety Information:
Why amber Teething necklaces are safe to wear:
Are you considering purchasing an amber teething necklace? If so, you may have wondered whether or not amber teething necklaces are safe to wear for your infant. If you want to know why amber teething necklaces are a great option for teething and how safe they really are, read on to find out everything you need to know regarding their safety.
What amber teething necklaces are made from:
Amber teething necklaces are made from amber “beads,” which are shaped pieces of amber that are strung on an elastic material in order for the beads to be worn as a necklace. Amber is not a mineral or gemstone, but fossilized tree resin which has hardened over millions of years. Amber is typically harvested from the Baltic region, but there are other sources of amber which can be used to make amber teething necklaces.
Amber teething jewelry, including amber necklaces and amber bracelets, are designed to be worn against bare skin. When they are worn against skin, the skin heats up the amber, which produces oil that gets absorbed through the skin layer. This oil contains a natural compound called succinic acid, which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent; it reduces inflammation in the gums which in turn reduces teething pain.
Do amber teething necklaces cause side effects?
No. There are no known side effects to wearing amber teething necklaces. Succinic acid is a compound which is naturally found in the body in trace amounts; wearing an amber teething necklaces increases the amount of succinic acid in the body, which helps the body fight the inflammation that causes painful teething discomfort.
Are amber teething necklaces safe to wear?
Yes. Amber teething necklaces are safe to wear, in fact, they are just as safe for infants to wear as any other piece of jewelry. There are some basic precautions that parents should take when using amber teething necklaces, but these precautions remain the same whether your infant is wearing an amber necklace or a pearl necklace their grandma got them for their birthday.
Basic safety precautions to keep in mind when having your baby wear an amber teething necklace:
1) Never let them wear it to sleep:
Children should not wear any necklaces to sleep, including amber teething necklaces, as these can present a serious choking hazard. Always remove a baby’s necklace before they head to sleep. If they really need the amber jewelry during their naptime, consider purchasing a fitted amber anklet instead.
2) Always supervise children wearing amber necklaces:
As with any jewelry, you will need to keep an eye on your infant while they wear amber jewelry. This is to make sure that they don’t end up putting the beads in their mouth, tugging on the string, or otherwise creating a situation where they might get injured. It is best to avoid wearing amber teething necklaces in situations where you can’t supervise them and react immediately ifs something goes wrong; i.e., take the necklaces off before getting into the car.
3) Inspect necklaces regularly for damage.
Make sure you are inspecting your baby’s amber teething necklace regularly for damages, as damages increase the chances of the beads breaking and turning into choking hazards.
Other than keeping in mind common sense safety measures that apply for any type of jewelry, there is no need to be worried when it comes to amber teething necklaces.
